High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Plywood is a type of manufactured wood made from thin sheets of wood. A common reason for using plywood instead of plain wood is its resistance to cracking, shrinkage, twisting/warping, and its general high degree of strength. There are usually an odd number of plies, as the symmetry makes the board less prone to warping. The layers are glued together so that adjacent plies have their wood grain at right angles to each other for greater strength.

Citizen Soldiers

But not until 1500 did the trucks arrive. They brought only twenty-six assault boats, instead of the thirty-three that had been promised. And they were the frailest of craft-six metres long, of canvas, with a reinforced plywood bottom. There were only three paddles per boat. The Waal was almost 400 metres wide, with a swift current of about ten kilometres per hour. The paratroopers pushed off into deep water, thirteen men to a boat, plus three British engineers with the paddles. As they got out into the current and headed for the far bank, the Germans opened fire. Cook and Keep were in the first boat. "It was a horrible picture, this river crossing," Captain Keep wrote to his mother, "set to (lie deafening roar of omnipresent firing. It was fiendish and dreadful. Defenceless, frail canvas boats jammed to overflowing with humanity, all striving desperately to cross the Waal as quickly as possible, and get to a place where at least they could fight." Some boats took direct hits, leaving nothing but flotsam. The flotilla came on ...

Plywood. A Material Story
Produced to accompany an exhibition at the V&A, this book is the first comprehensive study of the history of plywood and its myriad applications throughout the ages, unveiling the stories behind objects that surround us and that we often take for granted. Plywood is an astonishingly versatile material, made by gluing together layers of cross-grained veneers, creating a pliable board that can be stronger than solid wood. Stylish and practical, plywood offers huge possibilities for experimental design, and it has been used to make a wide range of products, from airplanes, boats, and automobiles to architecture and furniture. An ideal material for the digital age, plywood has become popular again in recent years and is widely used in contemporary design and manufacturing. This book traces the history of plywood from its use in eighteenth-century furniture, through its emergence as an industrial product in the nineteenth century, to a material celebrated by twentieth-century modernists such as Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames.
